MUSEOEUROPE 2023 - THE CONVERGENCE OF MILLENNIA

The international symposium

Presentation of international research contributions in the field of heritage trails and parks,

landscapes and open-air museums, and the interpretation of cultural heritage.

(Knight's Hall, entrance from Grajska Street 2)

As usual, this year's symposium will also feature a guest object from a friendly European museum. This time it is a replica of the iconic Strettweg chariot. It was made in 1979 at the Roman-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz and is preserved by the Universalmuseum Joanneum in Graz.  Copies in museums today are primarily intended to protect the original object and contribute to rescue, conservation, heritage protection or education. By copying a damaged, fragile object in its original technique and materials, the original is successfully replaced and made accessible to the public.

The original cult chariot was found in the middle of the 19th century in a richly furnished princely grave from the earlier Iron Age in Strettweg, near Judenburg, Austria. It is preserved by the Joanneum Museum in Graz and represents one of the most important archaeological finds in Europe. The story of the guest object is told in the opening lecture of the symposium by MSc. Daniel Modl, Chief Curator of Prehistory and Early Middle Ages at the Department of Archaeology and Numismatic Cabinet of the Joanneum Universal Museum in Graz.
