VARIATIONS - HOMMAGE TO FRANZ LISZT

''The highest reward for a person's toil is not what he gets for it, but what he becomes by it.''
John Ruskin

VARIATIONS - HOMAGE TO FRANZ LISZT is a project that we at the Maribor Regional Museum initially conceived as an accompanying programme to the exhibition Franz Liszt – a short European tour (2016), and subsequently implemented it as a permanent museum programme, in collaboration with the Maribor Conservatoire of Music and Ballet, which promotes the museum’s musical heritage (its collection of musical instruments) and intangible cultural heritage, and provides educational activities.

It encourages young musicians from Maribor and their teachers to perform in the Knights’ Hall at Maribor Castle, thereby continuing the musical tradition at the castle. At each event, information is provided to the audience about a concert by Franz Liszt, which took place on 16 June 1846 in the Knights’ Hall of Maribor Castle, where the project is being carried out. All the performers thus keep the memory of Liszt’s concert alive and, by performing the music, uphold the tradition of musical events in the Knights’ Hall.

The project has been running continuously since 2016; it takes place every year in April, May and June, with a few events also held in the autumn months. The core of the project consists of pre-graduation concerts by selected pupils Maribor Conservatoire of Music and Ballet, concerts by young, up-and-coming musicians (music students), end-of-year concerts by the Department of Music at the Faculty of Education, University of Maribor, and concerts by lecturers, which encourage intergenerational collaboration. The project also includes lectures on the subject of musical heritage.

The highlight of the project Variations – A Tribute to Franz Liszt is an evening piano concert held as part of the Summer Museum Night, which each year commemorates the anniversary of Liszt’s concert at Maribor Castle and presents young musicians as his successors. The programme always includes works by Liszt.
