Glass traces - glassmaking in north-eastern Slovenia

The north-eastern part of Slovenia, rich in timber and water resources, also boasts a rich history of glassmaking. In the 18th and 19th centuries, nearly 40 glassworks operated in the Pohorje, Celje and Kozjansko regions. In Josipdol on Pohorje, the furnaces stopped operating in 1909. There was a time, however, when glassworks provided bread for many Slovenians, and their owners were not insensitive landlords, but often socially responsible people who provided education for the children of their workers.
