You are the glory and the praise of Belgrade, where your miraculous water gathers many
(Prayer to Saint Petka)

It is interesting to note that this spring dried up only once, in the period between 1915 and 1918, that is, in the years when Belgrade was occupied during the First World War. The people of Belgrade believe that the battles between the Austrians and the Serbs, that took place in this area at the very beginning of the Great War, were the reason for this occurance, and that the disappearance of the water was some sort of an omen of the exodus, that befell Serbia in the winter of 1915. The reappearance of the water in the winter of 1918 was considered a harbinger of the imminent liberation.
