We introduce children to life in the Stone Age and the profession of an archaeologist. Through the museum’s oldest exhibit—a fragment of a woolly mammoth tusk—they learn about this extinct animal. We discuss its size, color, fur, and teeth and discover how and why Stone Age humans hunted it. Finally, we simulate an archaeological excavation in sandboxes. The children dig up a mammoth skeleton from the sand and assemble it. Before leaving, they create a souvenir necklace made from an animal tooth.
