WE'RE GOING ON OUR OWN

The virtual exhibition We're going on our own presents seven independent cultural institutions in Maribor with common roots. They are the backbone of Maribor's institutional cultural activity. In addition to the Maribor Regional Museum, the exhibition also presents the Maribor University Library, the Maribor Regional Archive, the town's main Art Gallery, the Museum of National Liberation, the Maribor Synagogue and the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage the Maribor Regional Unit.

The exhibition We're going on our own was created to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Maribor Regional Museum as part of the project of the same name.

The Maribor Art Gallery is the second largest and one of the most important museums for modern and contemporary art in Slovenia. Since its foundation - almost 70 years ago - the UGM has been responsible for the continuous development of the collection of 20th and 21st-century art. Today, the Gallery links its core mission - the care of the artistic heritage - with the presentation of young artistic talent and the organisation of international projects, as well as with programmes in the wider field of the creative sector.

The first idea for an art gallery came from the "Grohar Art Club", which in 1922 bought the first work for the new gallery - Grohar's Chapel. These early demands for an art institution can be understood primarily in the context of the cultural aspirations of the "liberated capital on the river Drava". After the Second World War, the Maribor Regional Museum, accumulated a large number of high-quality paintings through the Collection Centre, and the then director, Prof. Bogo Teply, planned a new museum section for fine art from the 16th century onwards. As a result of these efforts, the Maribor Art Gallery was founded in 1954. It was established in the city palace on Orožnova Street and eventually took over part of the art collection of the Maribor Regional Museum and began to collect works of recent fine art.

As part of the celebration of the 120th anniversary of the Maribor Regional Museum, the Maribor Vedute exhibition will be held in the UGM Cabinet.The exhibition will consist of graphic maps from the collections of the UGM and the Maribor Regional Museum, including depictions of the Maribor Castle. The exhibition will also highlight a small painting by the impressionist Ivan Grohar, Chapel (in Crngrob), 1907 - its journey from private owners, through the Grohar Club to the Maribor Regional Museum and the UGM Collection.
