Helmet of the Austrian Imperial Guard

The Emperor's personal guard was composed of small units where only senior officers and generals could serve. The helmets of the imperial unit, decorated with buffalo hair, were particularly picturesque.

The black Austro-Hungarian officer's cap has a Slovene tricolour on its cockade instead of the monogram of Emperor Karl, which had been removed. Maister wore the cap at the time of the fall of the monarchy at the end of October 1918.
