The most important secular paintings of the 17th century were influenced by Flemish painting. They decorated noble dwellings and were mostly the work of foreign painters.
The Styrian painter Weissenkircher (1646-1695) was court painter to the Princes of Eggenberg. He produced numerous paintings for churches in Styria and Vienna. He depicted St Michael for the cathedral in Maribor.
Slomšek founded a divinity school in 1859 when he transferred the seat of the Lavantine diocese to Maribor, marking the beginning of higher education in Maribor.
Vischer produced two depictions of the castle. The one showing the castle from the south presents a high triangular gable on the castle façade, which is not preserved today. Of the four corner turrets, only the south-western is preserved.
Holzinger (1735-1797) was the successor of Josef Straub. After Straub's death, he bought a sculpture workshop from his widow.
