The virtual exhibition We're going on our own <\/strong>presents seven independent cultural institutions in Maribor with common roots. They are the backbone of Maribor's institutional cultural activity. In addition to the Maribor Regional Museum, the exhibition also presents the Maribor University Library, the Maribor Regional Archive, the town's main Art Gallery, the Museum of National Liberation, the Maribor Synagogue and the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage the Maribor Regional Unit.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe beginnings of the Historical Society for Slovenian Styria in 1903 laid the foundations for collecting and preserving Slovenian cultural heritage and archival material of Slovenian provenance in Maribor. The first archival collection, donated by the first president of the Historical Society - Matija Slekovec, decisively broke the previous practice of the outflow of archival documents to the Styrian Regional Archives in Graz.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

The Historical Society's efforts to formally establish the archive and to appoint Franjo Ba\u0161 as the Banovina Archivist bore fruit in 1933\nwhen the Maribor archive became the first regional archive and the first independent archive in Slovenia.
In 1941, when the archive ceased to exist as an independent institution, it was attached as a department to the Maribor Museum. Its professional activities almost ceased.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAs an independent archival cultural institution, the archive was reestablished in early 1952 under the name of the State Archive of the People's Republic of Slovenia - Maribor Branch.
