\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSlava \u2013 a Patron Saint\u2019s Day, is a tradition found among Serbian Orthodox Christians. This traditional celebration of a family\u2019s saint protector was inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2014. ''Slava'' is characterized by the gathering of families and friends around a festive table, and its symbols are the icon of the saint being celebrated, an especially decorated ''slava'' cake, a candle, wheat with sugar, walnuts and nutmeg, called ''\u017eito'', and wine. It is the day for gathering, forgiveness and love because Orthodox Serbs know that the Lord wants a pure heart.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

''Slava'' is celebrated on the day when the Serbian Orthodox Church commemorates a specific saint, which is the 27th of October in the case of Saint Petka. Among the Serbs, Saint Nicholas (the 19th of December), Saint John the Baptist (the 20th of January), Saint Michael the Archangel (the 21st of November), Saint George (the 6th of May) and Saint Petka are most often celebrated. As a rule ''slava'' is passed down from father to eldest son, and it rarely happens that someone changes the patron saint. Saint Petka is an exception from this rule because she is mostly celebrated by those whom she has helped. It often happens that Saint Petka is the second saint of a family that already has one, but because she helped a family member, she is also celebrated as a sign of gratitude.<\/p>

Worshipers of Holy Petka always fast on Fridays, because they consider that to be her day. Fasting ends with Holy Communion, which has a special significance when received on Petka's Day - the 27th of October.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

''Slava'' is also celebrated in the temples of the Serbian Orthodox Church. More precisely, they celebrate the saint to whom the church is dedicated. Thus, on October 27, thousands of people gather at the Chapel of Saint Petka at the Belgrade Fortress. They come to pray together, receive Holy Communion and ''break'' the ''Slava'' cake. Even though the spring and its water are accessible every day in the Chapel of Saint Petka, worshipers of the Saint believe that its special power is exuded particularly on the 27th of October. Everyone waits patiently for their piece of prosphoron, for a sip of consecrated wine and a spoonful of Slava wheat \u2013 \u017eito. The prayer can be heard from everyone\u2019s mouth: Venerable Mother Petka, pray to God for us.<\/p>\n

The celebration of Holy Petka - the consecration of wine and wheat - ''\u017eito'' is an important moment of the celebratory ritual, inscribed in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists in 2014.<\/em><\/p>\n
