EXPLORE - OPEN STORAGE

ART

The open storage of paintings showcases selected works from the collection, which includes more than a 1,000 depictions dating from the 16th to the mid-20th century. Most of the works come from Styrian churches, castles, manor houses and bourgeois houses. In the open storage they are arranged according to iconographic themes.

Baroque ecclesiastical painting is represented by H. A. Weissenkircher (1646-1695) altarpiece. Among the portraits, the most interesting are the depictions of members of the Attems family, the group portrait of the nobleman A. Rainer of Klagenfurt with his eight sons from the first half of the 17th century and the portrait of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order (1797-99). The 19th-century portraits depict mostly citizens of Maribor, including the works of the painter from Maribor, E. Lind (1827-99). Among the genres and still lifes, the works of European painters from the 17th century stand out, which used to decorate noble dwellings (Hrastovec, Slovenska Bistrica, etc.). The exhibition includes works by the German painter M. Bechtel, the Flemish painters F. Snyders (1579-1657), J. Fyt (1611-1661) and P. van Kessel (died 1668). Among the more interesting works by unknown European painters, is the Tower of Babel, a paraphrase of the famous painting by P. Bruegel the Elder from 1563. Among the landscapes are works by T. Porta (1686-1766), an important representative of the Italian School, and the German painter F. I. Flurer (1688-1742), who worked for Count I. M. Attems and produced various paintings for his castles. The vedute are dominated by depictions of Maribor and its surroundings from the first half of the 20th century. From that time are also the works of the copyist A. Nowak (1865-1932), who worked in Maribor.
