EXPLORE
Among archaeologists, there's a humorous saying: when you're not sure what something is, it's probably cult-related. The fact is, humans have always believed in “something” that helped them make sense of the phenomenon of life. Archaeological evidence for this includes findings associated with beliefs, superstitions, protection, and offerings to gods. The exhibition To All Gods and Goddesses presents a chronological overview of discoveries from the broader Maribor area that can be attributed with more than just practical value.
Treasure or deposit finds of intact and damaged metal objects are characteristic of the earlier period of the Late Bronze Age in our region. Bronze weapons, tools, and jewelry were placed by the inhabitants of that time in specially selected locations, predominantly in more secluded and remote areas. They buried them in the ground, placed them in pits or rock crevices, or deposited them in rivers or lakes. Initially, experts interpreted these finds as lost property belonging to traveling merchants and craftsmen, who were forced to hastily bury their possessions during turbulent times. Today, some of these finds are attributed a sacred role, being viewed as offerings dedicated to deities.
