EXPLORE
Paintings have power, they can replace words and open up views into completely unknown worlds.
In a joint project with Maribor Art Gallery in 2020, we are launching a series of activities dedicated to the study of the creation of the first collections of paintings and the centenary of organised artistic activity in Maribor.
The exhibition of the Maribor Regional Museum entitled INVENTORY NUMBER 1 presents paintings that came into the museum collection as a result of the work of the predecessors of the present museum - the Museum Society in Maribor, the Historical Society for Slovene Styria and the Diocesan Museum.
In the past decades we were mainly interested in the object as a work of art and as a document of a particular artistic style, environment and period. However in the context of the project INVENTORY NUMBER 1 we have also taken an interest in the donor or the collector, who for certain reason donated or acquired the object for his or her own or the museum's collection. The material is closely linked to Maribor and its inhabitants, and to the spirit of reflection and national identity at the turn of the 20th century.
We are convinced that these stories can be appealing to modern-day museum visitors.

Unknown painter, Count Janez Jakob Khisl on the catafalque, 1637, acquired by the Museum Society from the Maribor Magistrate's Office
The Counts of Brandis took over some of the paintings along with Maribor Castle. The long-term owners before them were the Counts Khisl, who leased or owned the castle from 1571 to 1727. After 1620, the hereditary owner of Maribor Castle was Janez Jakob Khisl (John Jacob Khisl), who rebuilt the administrative court of the sovereign Prince.
In addition to the aforementioned depictions of the two castles, the museum has also preserved a painting of Count John Jacob Khisl on the catafalque. The count died on the 23rd of June 1637 at the age of 73. The painting first hung in the church of Our Lady of Mercy and Grace in the former Capuchin monastery in Maribor, and later in the Loreto chapel of the castle. The museum's collection also holds a depiction of Maribor Castle from around 1683, showing the building after the renovation works (1667-1682).
In the inventory log written at the time of death of John Jacob II. Khisl in 1690, the furnishings of the Loreto chapel (consecrated in 1661) are listed. The list included not only liturgical items, but also votive offerings (necklaces, belts, pendants) and votive paintings. Seventeen votive paintings survived, dating from 1661 to 1732. They are linked to religion and, although they are of a lesser quality, they were on public display. The Loreto Chapel of the castle became very popular among the townspeople soon after its construction in 1655.
