Artifacts are like muses that lead us into the mysteries
of our heritage. Curators are guardians who ensure that these objects are preserved for the
future.
C. Körner, Portrait of Dr. Amanda Rak, 1921. Gift of the Rak family, Maribor Regional Museum.
Amand Rak was born in Ljubljana, studied medicine in Graz, and in 1874 settled in Maribor as a general practitioner. He quickly became involved in the social life of the city. He was a member of the Medical Society, the board of the Municipal Savings Bank, and on 31 May 1902 he was elected president of the Museum Society in Maribor.
As part of his museum work, he led the archaeological excavations at Spodnja Hajdina near Ptuj, and regularly monitored the excavations at Radvanje, Razvanje and Poštela. When the museum was opened in 1903, he took charge of the first inventory book and diligently recorded donations from the townspeople. He prepared the first exhibition that was open to the public, took charge of guiding tours of the museum, took care of promotion and advertising in the local newspaper, kept the minutes, and took care of the museum's reputation both in the local and wider environment. He died after a short illness on 28 September 1919.
