A temporary exhibition titled Maribor Painter Eduard Lind has opened its doors at Cinema Partizan.
It is dedicated to the life and work of Maribor Painter Eduard Lind, who worked in Maribor during the second half of the 19th century. The exhibition, marking the 120th anniversary of the artist's death, offers an insight into the oeuvre of this important portraitist of the Maribor bourgeoisie.
Eduard Lind, with his photo-realistic painting style, successfully competed with contemporary photography and created an extensive body of work, that today represents a valuable visual chronicle of bourgeois life at the time. His best-known works include ten monumental portraits of Maribor mayors and other prominent citizens, who worked in the City Savings Bank and the Theatre and Casino Society. In addition to portraits, he painted sacred works and landscapes and participated in the restoration of paintings.
The exhibition was prepared by Dr Valentina Bevc Varl, curator and museum art historian, who has spent many years researching Lind's life and work. In addition to the in-depth study of archival material and museum objects, an important part of her research has been the search for lost works by Lind, involving several media outlets. The exhibition features four previously unknown works by Lind, two of which are now part of the Maribor Regional Museum's collection, and two of which are on loan from private owners.
Special attention was also given to the systematic restoration of Lind's paintings, which are presented to the public for the first time in such a comprehensive way.
Accompanying the exhibition is a scientific monograph Eduard Lind, Painter of the Maribor Bourgeoisie (1827–1904), written by Dr. Valentina Bevc Varl. The monograph, the seventh publication in the museum collection Illuminated Heritage, provides a thorough examination of the painter's life journey and an overview of his works based on iconographic themes. A key part of the book is an analysis of Lind's personal notebook, which reveals details about his works, clients, and prices.
The exhibition Maribor Painter Eduard Lind will be on view at Cinema Partizan until October 12, 2025.
