Nataša Prosenc Stearns: Suspended colonade

The suspended colonnade is a project through which the artist Nataša Prosenc Stearns participates in the project Rocker of Ideas. In the projection hall of the former cinema that now houses the museum storage space for furniture, her physical intervention, three video projections and an original sound background has created a vibrating heritage and artistic meta-space.

The video shows a floating female figure, multiplied in numerous variations, creating repetitions of her own image in the rhythm of colonnades. Artistically, the image avoids banality through a transition from a specific figural appearance into abstraction and back again. It resembles the colonnades of Antiquity, while the switching of the internal space into external space in the video brings to mind the colonnade designed by the architect Jože Plečnik around the sadly never realised Cathedral of Freedom.

The suspended colonnade can be interpreted as the artist’s tribute to the female’s body, which avoids unambiguous definitions. The female body protects our cultural treasure house not only with its silent presence and strength, as a body of a caryatid caught in stone, but also with ritual motion. This is not the party of Matisse’s dance, which transfers to the viewer the light of playfulness. Instead, this is protection that does not smother that which it protects, but illuminates it playfully and creates new artistic phenomena. Through joyful leaping, it weaves around the collected museum furniture an energy field, a web of life. It is not a fixation of the past or protection through a denial of rights, but the artist’s recognition of cultural values and her deep respect for heritage. The movement of the female body is transferred to the static museum objects, which come to life. The woman is also addressing the objects: I am the one you remember in your motionlessness, I am the one that sat on you, I looked at myself in you, I stored my memories in you. It is about taking and giving, thanking the wood, glorifying the home. Nataša’s dance is a bow to the inherited. She was born here in order to exist in countless physical and spiritual worlds. This is her heritage.
