The exhibition shows the beginnings of museology in Maribor and its development into the Maribor Regional Museum from 1896 to 2003. The exhibition is located in the castle cellar where the restaurant Grajska klet once was. There the frescoes by Matej Sternen from 1940 are still preserved until this day. A part of the first museum exhibition from 1903 has been reconstructed and the museum collections are presented as the foundation of the museum's work. The heritage assembled in these collections defines the museum as a database of the cultural and historical identity of a certain place and time. How the Maribor Museum is placed among other defining cultural institutions is visible on the timeline printed on the room's floor. It records important events in the history of museums throughout the world.
