Description of the area of work:
The Maribor Regional Museum is a general museum with collections in archaeology, ethnology and cultural history. It operates in a wide area from Prekmurje through Styria to Carinthia. It has its own conservation and restoration workshop, teaching service, museum shop, café and other services.
The Maribor Regional Museum protects, researches and preserves material. It organises exhibitions and events to stimulate interest in and knowledge of the culture and history of the area in which it operates. The museum works with civil society, which responds to the museum's collections through creative interventions. Collaboration with collectors and craftspeople and the presentation and promotion of their work is introduced. Special attention is paid to younger visitors, for whom creative workshops are organised, and for pupils and students, expert guidance in the form of lessons. The museum runs an extensive andragogical programme for different target groups. Various events are held in the museum premises: concerts, lectures, professional meetings. The research activities of the curators are permanently recorded in the museum's publications, which are published on a regular basis.
The beginnings of the Maribor Regional Museum date back to 1903, when the Historical Society for Slovenian Styria was founded. In the same year, the Museum Society, founded in 1902, opened the first museum to the public in Maribor. Both societies, together with the Museum of the Diocese of Lavantine, founded in 1896, are the forerunners of today's museum. The collections of the Museum Society and the Historical Society merged in 1920, and in 1924 the Museum of the Diocese of Lavantine joined them with a collection of sacred art. In 1938, the combined collections began to operate in the premises of the Maribor City Castle, where the museum is still housed today.
